How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.' The righteous Servant makes many righteous by bearing their sin — justification, foretold. This is the Lord Jesus, by whose obedience many are made righteous (Rom. 5:18-19). God in flesh both bears the iniquity and justifies the guilty.
JewishThe servant's vindication after suffering and his benefit to 'many'; the national reading sees Israel's afflictions as ultimately profiting the nations.
CatholicThe justification of many through the Servant's atoning knowledge and sin-bearing — the fruit of the Passion.
ProtestantA foundational justification text — the righteous Servant justifies many by bearing their sins, fulfilled in Christ (Rom. 5:19).
