How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'All we like sheep have gone astray... and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.' Note who lays the sin on the Servant — the LORD Himself; and the Servant who bears it is God in flesh, the Lamb of God (John 1:29). God provided the offering by becoming it; the one God both lays the iniquity and bears it in Christ.
JewishThe confession of a straying people whose guilt falls on the servant; in the national reading, Israel's suffering bears the consequences of the nations' sin.
CatholicUniversal sinfulness met by the Servant who bears all iniquity; the Good Shepherd laying down His life for the straying sheep.
ProtestantSubstitution stated plainly — the LORD lays our iniquity on the Servant, fulfilled in Christ bearing our sins (1 Pet. 2:24-25).
