Hebrews opens its case by joining Psalm 2:7 ('Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee') to 2 Samuel 7:14 ('I will be to him a Father') — texts God never spoke to any angel, now fulfilled in the exalted Christ.

How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalPsalm 2:7's 'this day' points past Bethlehem to the Glorification: God raised Jesus and declared the natural-born Son His ruling Son with full household authority (Acts 13:33; Rom. 1:4). Sonship is real and begun in time — born Son, declared Son — not an eternal generation behind the one God.
JewishPsalm 2 is a coronation psalm: 'son' is the Davidic king adopted at enthronement, as with 2 Samuel 7's dynastic pledge.
CatholicRead with the Fathers as revealing the eternal generation of the Son, manifested in time at the resurrection-enthronement.
ProtestantThe royal texts converge on Christ at His exaltation; Acts 13:33 anchors 'this day' to the resurrection.
DispensationalThe Son's superiority to angels introduces the King whose Davidic rights (2 Sam. 7) will be exercised in the coming kingdom.
