How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe Comforter is the Spirit of truth — and Jesus identifies that coming Spirit with Himself: 'I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you' (v. 18). 'Another Comforter' (allos, of the same kind) is Christ Himself, come to dwell in them by the Spirit (v. 17). Father, Son, and indwelling Spirit are the one God; the Comforter who comes is the Lord Jesus Himself in the Spirit.
JewishNot part of Jewish tradition (a saying of Jesus in John); its background is the Hebrew hope of God's Spirit abiding with His people (Isa. 59:21; Ezek. 36:27) and the 'spirit of truth.'
CatholicThe promise of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, given to abide for ever; a key text in Trinitarian pneumatology (cf. the Catechism).
ProtestantChrist's promise of the indwelling Spirit of truth to every believer for ever — the basis of the believer's union with God.
