God stakes the Davidic and levitical covenants on the cosmos itself: only 'if ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night' can David lack a son to reign. Answering those who said 'the two families… he hath even cast them off,' God declares Israel's rejection as impossible as cancelling sunrise.

33:19And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying,

33:20Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;

33:21Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

33:22As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

33:23Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,

33:24Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.

33:25Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;

33:26Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

How Traditions Read This Prophecy

Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe sun still rises — therefore David's Son still reigns. The everlasting throne pledged here is occupied by Jesus, and the same day-and-night oath guarantees Israel is not cast off.
JewishA cornerstone anti-supersessionist text within Scripture itself: the seed of Jacob is as permanent as the created order.
CatholicGod's fidelity to Israel and to David's line is irrevocable (cf. Rom. 11:29); the Church reads its own security in the same oath.
ProtestantPaul's 'Hath God cast away his people? God forbid' (Rom. 11:1) answers exactly the taunt quoted in v.24 — the NT argues from this oracle's logic.
AcademicThe oracle responds to a quoted contemporary skepticism (v.24) — rare direct evidence of exilic debate about covenant failure; the creation-covenant analogy echoes Gen. 8:22.
