When Ahab humbles himself in sackcloth, God amends the timetable through Elijah: 'I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house' — fulfilled when Jehu destroys Joram, not Ahab, in Naboth's field (2 Kgs. 9:25-26).

The deferral is why the dynasty's fall lands in 841 BC — the very year the Black Obelisk shows Jehu paying tribute to Assyria as Israel's new strongman. The timeline of the mercy clause is thus externally datable.
