How Traditions Read This Prophecy

Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.' The Davidic promise reaches its height in the Lord Jesus — 'the firstborn from the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth' (Rev. 1:5), the firstborn among many brethren (Rom. 8:29). The Son who cries 'Thou art my father' is the man Christ Jesus, in whom the one God brought His firstborn into the world (Heb. 1:5-6).
JewishThe exalted status of the Davidic king as God's 'firstborn' and supreme among earthly kings — covenant language of adoption and pre-eminence for David's line.
CatholicApplied to Christ, God's firstborn exalted above all kings; the Davidic covenant fulfilled in Him (Heb. 1).
ProtestantA messianic reading via Hebrews 1 and Revelation 1:5 — Jesus the firstborn, supreme over the kings of the earth; the Davidic sonship realized in Christ.
AcademicRoyal-covenant language of divine adoption ('firstborn,' cf. 2 Sam. 7); the NT applies the Davidic sonship formulae to Jesus.
