How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalPsalm 40 is messianic — 'Lo, I come... a body hast thou prepared me' (vv. 6-8; Heb. 10:5-7): the incarnation. The same One 'preached righteousness in the great congregation' — the Lord Jesus openly proclaiming God's righteousness (John 18:20). God, having prepared Himself a body, declared His own righteousness among men.
JewishThe psalmist's public proclamation of God's faithfulness and righteousness in the assembly; thanksgiving for deliverance.
CatholicRead with Hebrews 10 of Christ's self-offering and His proclamation of the Father's righteousness; the 'great congregation' prefigures the Church.
