How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'This day have I begotten thee' is not eternal generation, and it does not point first to Bethlehem: Paul preaches it of the resurrection (Acts 13:33) and Hebrews of the glorified High Priest (Heb. 5:5). The one God was manifest in flesh as a true man — Son from birth — and at the appointed day the Father declared that born Son the ruling Son, with all authority in His household. The begetting here is enthronement, not the origin of a second person.
JewishA royal Psalm for David's coronation. Targumic tradition sees 'my son' as referring to the Messiah-King. The Talmud (Sukkah 52a) discusses messianic interpretations.
CatholicFulfilled in Christ's baptism, transfiguration, and resurrection. 'Today' in Hebrews 1:5 refers to the eternal generation of the Son.
ProtestantFulfilled at the resurrection — Paul explicitly cites this in Acts 13:33 as fulfilled at Christ's resurrection. Also applicable to the baptism.
