How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe rejected stone is Jesus, who is YHWH — "this is the LORD's doing" (v.23). The cornerstone is not a second divine person placed by the Father but YHWH himself rejected by his own people and vindicated in resurrection.
JewishOriginally applied to Israel — rejected among the nations, yet chosen by God. Sung at Passover (Hallel, Ps 113-118). The Talmud (Pesachim 119a) preserves discussion.
CatholicJesus explicitly identifies himself as this stone (Matt 21:42). Peter's citation before the Sanhedrin (Acts 4:11) is bold. The cornerstone of the Church.
ProtestantOne of the most clearly self-applied Messianic texts — Jesus cites it of himself. The rejected Messiah becomes the foundation.
AcademicOriginally a national/community Psalm. Jesus' self-application in the Temple (Mark 12:10) is historically attested by multiple sources. Peter's use in Acts is early Christian apologetic.
