Petra (Sela in Hebrew) — the rose-red city carved in the sandstone cliffs of Edom — was abandoned after Arab conquests. Modern excavations (Brown University Petra Archaeological Project) confirm the ancient city. Edom as a distinct people ceased to exist after the 1st century AD.
