Jesus deliberately sends for the donkey and colt so that Zechariah 9:9 — 'thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass' — is fulfilled in public view at the exact Passover of His death. Matthew cites the prophecy verbatim.

Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe King who enters lowly on a colt is the same LORD who will return in glory (Zech. 14:4); humility at the first coming, majesty at the second — one Lord, two advents.
JewishZechariah 9:9's humble king is read of the Messiah in the Talmud (b. Sanh. 98a — if unworthy, he comes 'lowly, riding on a donkey'), but Jesus' claim is not accepted.
CatholicThe entry manifests Christ's kingship in humility, liturgically commemorated on Palm Sunday.
