JewishFulfilled twice — by Babylon (586 BC) and Rome (AD 70). The desolation of the land is a central theological problem in post-destruction rabbinic theology.
CatholicThe destruction of Jerusalem (AD 70) is fulfillment of both Moses and Jesus (Luke 21:24). The land's restoration in modern times is a further fulfillment.
ProtestantA historically precise fulfillment — the land was desolate for 1,878 years before the modern Jewish return.
DispensationalThe desolation and restoration are both fulfilled — one of the most remarkable long-range prophecies in Scripture.
AcademicThe historical desolation of Judea under Roman rule is exceptionally well-documented. Mark Twain (1867) described a barren, nearly uninhabited land. The agricultural recovery post-1880 is equally well documented.
