“And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.”

Joshua's oath over the ruins: whoever rebuilds Jericho will lay its foundation at the cost of his firstborn and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest. Five centuries later, 'in his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD' (1 Kgs. 16:34).

Archaeological & Historical Evidence
Jericho (Tell es-Sultan) is the world's most excavated tell: City IV fell in a violent destruction with collapsed mudbrick walls and a burn layer — Garstang dated it ~1400 BC (matching Joshua), Kenyon ~1550 BC; the date remains genuinely contested (Bryant Wood's re-analysis argues for Garstang). What is not contested: a long occupation gap follows, exactly the centuries the curse held, with refounding in the Iron II period — Hiel's era.
