How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'Ye shall be scattered... and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.' Even abandoned by men, Jesus is never separated from the Father — for the Father was in Him (John 14:10): 'God was in Christ' (2 Cor. 5:19). The presence of the Father with the Son is the one God indivisibly present in the incarnate Lord.
JewishNot part of Jewish tradition (a saying of Jesus); the confidence of God's nearness to the forsaken righteous echoes the Psalms.
CatholicThe disciples' desertion foretold, and the Son's unbroken communion with the Father even in the Passion.
ProtestantJesus predicts the scattering (fulfilled in Gethsemane) yet rests in the Father's presence; His union with the Father unbroken.
