How Traditions Read This Prophecy

Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'The Comforter... whom I will send unto you from the Father... he shall testify of me.' The Son sends the Spirit from the Father — the one God in action; and the Spirit's whole work is to testify of Jesus, because the Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. He does not point to a separate third Person but bears witness to Christ, in whom all the fulness of the Godhead dwells.
JewishNot part of Jewish tradition; the 'Spirit of truth' proceeding from God and bearing witness draws on the Hebrew Spirit-of-prophecy theme.
CatholicA central text on the Spirit who 'proceedeth from the Father' (discussed in the Filioque) and testifies to Christ alongside the apostolic witness.
ProtestantThe Spirit and the apostles together bear witness to Christ; the Spirit of truth authenticates the gospel.
AcademicThe procession language ('proceedeth from the Father') became central to the East-West Filioque controversy; here it functions to ground the Spirit's witness to Jesus.
