How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalGod promises to 'pour water upon him that is thirsty... pour my spirit upon thy seed' — fulfilled at Pentecost and in the new birth (Acts 2:17; John 7:38-39). The same passage declares 'I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God' (v. 6) — the absolute monotheism the whole site rests on. The God who pours out His Spirit and the Lord Jesus, 'the first and the last' (Rev. 1:17), are one God.
JewishGod's reassurance to Jacob-Israel, His chosen servant, promising the outpouring of His Spirit and blessing on their offspring, with a ringing declaration of His sole deity ('beside me there is no God').
CatholicThe outpouring of the Spirit on God's people, fulfilled at Pentecost; the strict monotheism affirmed and, in Christian reading, unfolded in the triune naming.
