How Traditions Read This Prophecy
JewishClassic corporate reference to the Exodus. The nation Israel is God's firstborn son (Exod 4:22). No Messianic reading in mainstream rabbinic sources.
CatholicMatthew 2:15 is a typological fulfillment — Christ recapitulates Israel's history. The Magisterium upholds both senses (literal historical + typological).
ProtestantMatthew's use is typological/pesher exegesis. Christ as the true Israel relives the Exodus pattern. Common in Reformed covenant theology.
DispensationalIsrael and Christ both called 'son'; Matthew applies a sensus plenior. The double fulfillment is characteristic of prophetic telescoping.
