How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalMelchizedek — king of righteousness, king of peace, priest of the most high God — prefigures the One who is Himself our righteousness, our peace, and our access to God.
JewishPsalm 110's priest-king is read in the Talmud variously of Abraham (b. Ned. 32b transfers the priesthood from Melchizedek to Abraham) — not of a divine messiah.
CatholicMelchizedek's bread-and-wine offering (Gen. 14:18) is read from the Fathers as prefiguring the Eucharist of the eternal Priest.
ProtestantThe psalm itself, written under the law, announces the law's obsolescence: a new priesthood means a new covenant (Heb. 7:12).
DispensationalChrist's present Melchizedek ministry in heaven precedes His Davidic ministry on earth — priest now, king manifest at His return.
AcademicThe figure of Melchizedek generated rich Second-Temple speculation (11Q13; Philo; 2 Enoch), against which Hebrews' argument was intelligible to its first readers.
