“So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”

Hebrews joins Psalm 2:7 ('Thou art my Son') to Psalm 110:4 ('Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec'): the same person God enthrones as Son He also swears in as eternal priest — offices no man could combine under the law.

How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalDeclared Son and sworn Priest in the same breath — Hebrews 5:5 cites Psalm 2:7 of the Glorification, when the Father installs the proven Man as High Priest. Zechariah foresaw it: 'he shall be a priest upon his throne' (Zech. 6:13), fulfilled only in Jesus.
JewishPsalm 110 is read of David or Abraham in rabbinic tradition; kingship and priesthood were deliberately separated in Israel (cf. Uzziah's judgment, 2 Chr. 26).
CatholicChrist's priesthood is not self-taken but conferred by the Father's oath — the basis of the one priesthood the Church shares.
ProtestantThe Melchizedek oath (Ps. 110:4) bypasses Levi entirely, establishing a priesthood grounded in an indestructible life.
DispensationalThe union of throne and priesthood awaits full display when the Branch builds the temple and rules (Zech. 6:12-13).
