How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalPeter applies Moses' promise — 'A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up... like unto me; him shall ye hear' (Deut. 18:15) — to the Lord Jesus. He is the Prophet greater than Moses (Heb. 3:3), to whom all must give ear or be cut off. The God who spoke at Sinai now speaks finally in His Son (Heb. 1:1-2), the Lord Jesus.
JewishDeuteronomy 18:15 promises a prophet like Moses; read of the prophetic succession or an eschatological prophet (the 'prophet like Moses' figured in Jewish expectation, cf. John 1:21).
CatholicChrist the new and greater Moses, the Prophet to whom all must listen, fulfilled in Jesus (cf. Heb. 3).
ProtestantJesus is the Prophet like Moses (Deut. 18) whom God raised up; to reject His word is to be cut off (Acts 3:23).
