How Traditions Read This Prophecy

Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus.' The promise to David (2 Sam. 7:12) is kept in the Lord Jesus, the Saviour — and the name JESUS means 'the LORD saves,' for the Saviour God promised is God Himself come in flesh (Matt. 1:21). David's seed and Israel's Saviour are the one Lord Jesus.
JewishThe promise of a Davidic deliverer for Israel (2 Sam. 7); the identification of Jesus as that Saviour is the apostolic claim, not Jewish.
CatholicPaul's synagogue proclamation that Jesus, of David's line, is the promised Saviour of Israel.
ProtestantThe fulfillment of the Davidic promise — God raised up Jesus, of David's seed, as Saviour (cf. Luke 1:69).
AcademicLuke's Pauline sermon ties Jesus to the Davidic promise; 'Saviour' (soter) language situates Jesus within both Jewish hope and Greco-Roman benefactor ideals.
