The heart of Nathan's oracle to David: God pledges a father-son relationship with David's promised descendant, whose kingdom is established forever. Hebrews 1:5 applies this directly to Christ.

How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe covenant pledges a father/son relationship — fulfilled when the invisible God expressed Himself visibly in the son of David: 'God was manifest in the flesh' (1 Tim. 3:16). Whatever God as Father is invisibly, Jesus Christ is and manifests visibly — born natural Son, later declared ruling Son (Rom. 1:4).
JewishFulfilled in Solomon and the Davidic dynasty; the chastening clause ('if he commit iniquity') shows a human, fallible king is in view, not a sinless messiah.
CatholicA dynastic promise fulfilled provisionally in Solomon and definitively in Christ, Son of David and Son of God (cf. Lk. 1:32-33).
ProtestantClassic dual-horizon prophecy: near fulfillment in Solomon, ultimate fulfillment in Christ, as Hebrews 1:5 makes explicit.
