How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) Pentecostal'Thou shalt feed (shepherd) my people Israel' — spoken of David, but Matthew cites it of the Ruler from Bethlehem who shepherds Israel (Matt. 2:6), the Lord Jesus. David the shepherd-king is a type of the Son of David, the Good Shepherd (John 10), who is Himself God come to feed His flock (Ezek. 34:15, 23).
JewishThe elders anoint David as shepherd-king over Israel, fulfilling God's word; David as the ideal shepherd-ruler of the nation.
CatholicDavid's shepherd-kingship prefigures Christ the Good Shepherd and true King of Israel (cf. Matt. 2:6).
ProtestantA type of Christ — the shepherd-king of Bethlehem; Matthew applies the shepherd-ruler language to Jesus (Matt. 2:6).
