How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalThe stone God lays in Zion is the church's one foundation (1 Cor. 3:11); upon the revelation of who Jesus is — 'thou art the Christ' — the assembly is built (Mt. 16:16-18).
JewishIsaiah's tested stone in Zion is variously the remnant, the temple, or the Davidic king — a pledge of security amid Assyrian crisis; Targum Isaiah reads a mighty king.
CatholicChrist the cornerstone, with apostles and prophets as foundation courses (Eph. 2:20), structures the one Church.
ProtestantFaith's object is a person: 'he that believeth on him' — the stone is not an institution but the Messiah Himself.
DispensationalThe stone rejected by Israel becomes head of the church age; Israel's stumbling (Rom. 9:32-33) is neither total nor final.
