How Traditions Read This Prophecy
Apostolic (Oneness) PentecostalPaul hands on the gospel he received: 'Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures... was buried... rose again the third day according to the scriptures.' The whole Old Testament — Isaiah 53, Psalm 16:10, Hosea 6:2 — converges here. The One who died and rose is the Lord Jesus, God in flesh, who tasted death for us and conquered it; this is the bedrock the apostolic gospel and the Syllabus (Acts 2:38) rest upon.
Jewish'According to the scriptures' appeals to the Hebrew Bible; mainstream Judaism does not find a dying-and-rising Messiah there, though resurrection hope itself is Jewish (Dan. 12:2).
CatholicThe earliest creedal summary of the gospel — death, burial, resurrection 'according to the Scriptures'; the foundation of the kerygma (cf. the Catechism).
